The Africa I Know (T.A.I.K) A.I. Camp is a groundbreaking initiative designed to empower and inspire the next generation of African tech innovators. . In its first edition, hosted in collaboration with Mekelle University and Mekelle American Corner, the camp brought together 105 high school students from across the region for an immersive, fully funded training in artificial intelligence. These young participants, many of whom have faced significant adversity—including surviving the devastating Tigray war—demonstrated incredible resilience, determination, and an unwavering passion for learning. Over the course of a transformative week, they evolved from passive technology users into confident creators, equipped with the skills and vision to make meaningful contributions to their communities through A.I.
Through T.A.I.K’s vision and the support of dedicated partners, this A.I. Camp is not just an event—it’s a movement to reimagine Africa’s technological future. By investing in young minds, fostering innovation, and creating platforms for knowledge-sharing and collaboration, The Africa I Know is paving the way for a brighter future where A.I. becomes a tool for empowerment, development, and positive change. The journey has only just begun, but with continued support, these students will go on to become the leaders, creators, and change-makers who will shape Africa—and the world—for generations to come.
The camp provided students with a solid foundation in artificial intelligence, coding, and problem-solving, all while encouraging collaboration, creativity, and real-world application. One of the program’s key highlights was the Hackathon, where students worked in teams to develop innovative A.I. solutions to tackle pressing community issues—from improving access to education and healthcare to addressing mental health challenges like PTSD. Their ideas were a powerful testament to the untapped talent, ingenuity, and potential that exists within Africa’s youth, and underscored the importance of making STEM education accessible, especially in regions affected by conflict and limited resources.
